Tips for your first DBQ essay!

Thesis:  When writing the thesis, keep these important things in mind…..
-       You are not stating your opinion or taking a side.  Do not start off your paper with, “I think Buddhism……”
-       You will not be using GSPRITE categories within this essay.  You are answering a question that asks you to analyze reactions to Buddhism.  Within your thesis, you will want to communicate to the reader (in a nut shell) what you observed while reading the documents.
-       You do not address the additional document in the thesis statement.  The additional document is a terrific thing to address at the conclusion of your paper after you have recapped your thesis.

POV’s:
-       When addressing point of view, make sure you are identifying the correct person producing the document.  Document citations always lists the author by name first and then follow with any additional information about the source such as whom they are employed by,  their occupation or other facts surrounding the publication of the document.
-       If you are not addressing the author, you are not addressing POV.  Identify the author of the document and tell why the reader may need to be aware of potential bias.
-       An easy way to address POV is to use a follow-up sentence while you are addressing the document.  The following is an example of POV that is being addressed for a fictional document concerning a defeated Roman soldier during the collapse of his home city of Rome.  The underlined portion identifies POV.
“The Roman soldier in this document obviously has little respect for the barbarian warriors he meets as he refers to them as “smelly” and “dirty” in his account.  The lack of respect is probably due to the fact that they are destroying his beloved city and he is witnessing the destruction of his society at the hands of this enemy.”

Missing document:
-       Your missing document should be a source that would shed a new light on the topic at hand.
-       Make sure your missing voice is within the scope of the region/time period for which you are writing.  For example: When commenting on ancient China, you would not want to state that a source you would like to hear from would be a native American from the Aztec tribe.  Stay within the region and use local voices appropriate to the time frame.
-       You will need to identify WHY you need to hear from this person or group of persons.
-       Do not identify a document already in the collection as a potential missing voice (ex:”I would like to hear from another Buddhist scholar”)
-       If you have identified several missing voices, include all of them in your essay.  Remember, additional effort=potential for expanded core points.

Mesopotamia DBQ.....

We will have time on Monday during class to go over some of the points on the essay.  Please remember that your paper must follow and satisfy all the requirements of the rubric I handed out in class.  When you are constructing your body paragraphs remember to cite documents (can use short citations such as "In Doc #4")  Provide evidence by using a paraphrase from the document followed by a short explanation as to how this supports your thesis (remember....the reader is not allowed to assume anything when reading an essay).  You do not need to include bibliographical information as it is all ready given on the page.  To make arrangement easy, use GSPRITE categories to structure your paper. You are required to select a total of two GSPRITE categories, however, you may elect to include more.  Good luck with this essay and please ask any questions you may have in class or by e-mail after hours.  If you need additional copies of the documents or the rubric, please visit the Google Calendar.

Last minute C+C essay tips......

As you are finalizing your info for tomorrow's essay, please keep the following suggestions in mind....
1.  Remember to place specific information in your thesis when describing comparisons and contrasting elements.
2.  Essay may be structured however you like.  You do not need to follow a five paragraph format.  The only thing you need to concern yourself with is hitting all points on the rubric.
3.  Remember to obey the time period (WWI- Late 1930's).  Information that falls outside this time period will most likely be disqualified.
4.  You do not need to address a specific SPRITE(s) for this essay.  You do not need to say "social" or "political" within the thesis of this essay.  In this case, thinking along the SPRITE categories may give you some ideas about what you can put in your essay.
5.  Hint: If you take a look at the locations, these are all areas outside of Europe that have either been colonized or have seen some European influence/ interference during this time.
6.  If you are still strapped for topics on these locations, remember to take a look at the Chapter 28 and 29 study guides and notes.  A great deal of information can be found in these previous chapters detailing the time period.

Good Luck on the Essay Tomorrow!

Tips for your upcoming C+C on 4/18.....

Remember..........
-Select only two of the regions provided.  Bringing in the third will result in severe point deductions on essay.

-You will notice that there are no provided GSPRITE categories.  This is a good thing because you can create your own!  It is not necessary to use the terms "political", "social" or "economic" in your thesis, however, it never hurts to set the structure of the thesis/ essay.

-When writing a thesis, be sure to include specific information on topics.
-Example of what NOT to do: "Politically, The Middle East was the same as Asia."  In your essay, you should should specify what exactly is the same (i.e.- specify government style, leadership, political party, etc.)
