Week of November 8th.....

This week our primary focus will be on Post-classical China and tributary states of the Tang and Song Empires.  The good news is that you already know a great deal about these empires because of the document-based question we completed several weeks ago (it was the one that involved reactions to Buddhism).  We are also going to complete a couple of exercises that will help you recall information that we have covered in class from first quarter (remember......all this information will be important for the semester final and the AP Test at the end of the year).  We will end the week with our Roman vs. Barbarian DBQ on Friday.  Check this blog during the week as I will be posting tips and strategies we will be covering in class.

The Document-Based Question for this Friday......

Here is the prompt that we discussed in class last week.  As you read this, think about the possible documents that may be present that accompany this question.  Look for clues as to how to structure a possible thesis that will answer this prompt.

Analyze the following documents and interpret the actions of the nomadic tribes who conquered the Roman Empire.  Can these nomads be called barbarians?  Is there any evidence of change over time of the views held about the nomadic tribes?  What kind of additional documents would help assess how these tribes were seen, especially by the Romans?

Hint: Think about the traditional definition of "Barbarian" that we discusses in Chapter 4 (see chapter 4 study guide).  How and why would the Romans apply this term to the nomadic tribes invading the empire?  What would be considered barbarian-like behavior?
